The Green Book Caravan

Victor H. Green’s guide told Black travelers where they could eat, sleep and buy gas. This is his 1948 edition, scanned page by page at the Schomburg Center. We built three of the places it sent people.

Everything quoted here is read off a scan: the 1948 and 1963–64 Green Books (Schomburg Center, NYPL, no known US copyright restrictions), newspapers from the Library of Congress, the Rossonian’s 1995 National Register file and the Theresa’s 1993 city landmark report. Where we had to guess, the rooms say so. The touring band is our framing.

Draft, not yet validated. "Negro" in the book’s title was the period term. Radical Imagination.
